Photographing Nostalgia.
Somewhere in the Mojave, 2026
I love finding old cars in the landscape, so much so I made an entire project out of it. I don’t think I have ever photographed a new car mainly because I find them very unappealing visually. One might think that the likes of Stephen Shore walked around finding old classic cars and putting them in his photographs, but at the time the cars would not have been old, or classics for that matter. Whenever I think about this it gives me a headache, but it’s a good example of how a photograph can change meaning over time. Although any image may become nostalgic, its not what I think when I look at a Stephen Shore photograph. One only has to view a Shore on Instagram to see that it looks as if it was taken yesterday.
I can’t imagine an electric car like a Tesla will one day be called a classic, but maybe I lack the insight Shore had. For now I’ll stick with the classics.
